Since I don't really have a lot of work these days (which is both good and bad, good because I have a lot of time to spend on what I love doing, bad because I don't get any money and make no improvements in my engineer formation) I'm studying photography a lot. I'm really into Ansel Adams, I'm taking a deep look on his trilogy (The Camera, The Negative and The Print). I'm trying to learn using Capture One by Phase One, I realized it's probably the best raw processor out there. Details - CANON 400d, EF-S 10-22 @ 10mm, f/8, 41s, ISO 100. - B+W ND 110 (10 stops ND filter) - Tripod The shot Shot in Levanto, a few minutes before sunset. The Processing Capture One - Recovered some highlights and shadows Photoshop: - Converted to black and white using a Silver EFEX Pro - Created 7 Overlay layers to adjust light (in total, created while going through the other steps) - Multiplied the sky - Added two curve layers to lighten up the left part - Improved microcontrast with Unsharp Mask - Corrected perspective on the house on the left using the free transform tool - Used the lens distortion tool to straighten and level the horizon - Resized - Sharpened (SS + More Accurate, rocks and mountain only) - Framing and signature. Noise-wise, Aperture has done a fair bit "behind the scenes" to reduce noise (converting the RAW with Photoshop shows more work to be done than is obvious here. I tried to correct for the lens distortion but Adobe doesn't seem to have an APS-C correction profile for the 17-40. I will probably end up downloading their Profile Creation Tool and doing that so that I can correct these photos. This also looks a little weird to my eye because of the perspective -- the lines are a bit weird. I tried to fix it in photoshop with simple quadrilateral transforms, but that made the lens distortions more obvious. After I correct lens disortion, I'll be able to fix small perspective issues like that. The photo was also a bit tilted, so I had to straighten it... which I did along the lines on the top and bottom of Luna Park Cafe. I think it might be better if I did it along the central horizontal window edge. If we weren't leaving for Hawaii this afternoon, I would remove all the extra lights along the edges to more properly frame the subject. This picture itself is not really anything fancy, but the fact that I can take it at all is a revelation. I'm pretty sure I was on spot metering for ISO with manual aperture and shutter speed settings.
